Moving into my 5th year of teaching I am looking forward to taking on the challenge of a new environment and international edge. I come from a large comprehensive school in rural Suffolk in England, so I am excited by the diversity a city like Houston has to offer.
Having studied both Film and English at University, I have taught Media and English language/ Literature across all secondary key stages 3-5, with particular success at A level in literature due to a passion for Gothic literature and debating. In my previous school I founded the debating society, competing in regional competitions with Key Stage 5 students and public speaking in year 9-11. I am excited about bringing these skills to Houston. I am passionate about Shakespeare and language and hope to ignite this passion in my students and encourage them to love learning.
One of my biggest achievements has been my involvement with Cambridge University Classics department to introduce classics into literature study in mainstream schools. This project involves developing students oracy skills in storytelling bringing with it a wealth of cross curricular and higher level thinking skills, while igniting children’s passion for classic literature. I hope to continue the success of the project and develop links with Cambridge University to introduce the War with Troy scheme in Houston and pupils to have the opportunity to discover the wonder of classics.
During my interview I realized very quickly that the school has a lot to offer its pupils, its approach to individualized learning and opportunities for its students, embodied my own feelings about the nature of learning for young people. I wanted a new challenge where I could develop as a teacher and ignite my passion for my subject and teaching practice in an international setting, and I can see I won’t be disappointed.
Having studied Film and English at University, I have a passion for film, theatre and performing arts and have taken part in musicals and plays in England which I hope to continue in Houston. I also have a slightly daring and adventurous side – having been known to sky-dive, parasail and go white water rafting. I love to explore and will spend my free time traveling and enjoying the rich culture on offer, and the cuisine! But nothing beats a good book, and perhaps the dream of every English teacher: to be a published author.
What the students say about me
"Miss Wills is obsessed with Shakespeare and she has made me see why."
"Passionate. Interested. Kind."
"She uses humour and really gets to know the class; she encourages us to have opinions and to share them."
This School is different to all others I have worked at because…
The international diversity allows pupils to gain a much broader perspective and really gives them an edge both personally and academically. The opportunities for students to progress are supported by the one-to-one attention they can receive due to smaller class sizes. I am looking forward to providing a more individualised learning experience for my pupils.
