During my teaching career I have successfully set-up and led a number of departments and introduced to the British International School GCSE Law, Psychology, and IB Psychology. Currently I lead Psychology, Theory of Knowledge and Approaches to Learning (ATL). I am also Deputy IB Coordinator with responsibility for the pastoral care and general day-to-day well being of our IB students. I see my role as guiding and advising them; nurturing their ambitions within realistic parameters. It is also a time of social awareness and greater freedom as they develop as young adults. However alongside this new found independence they need to understand they must be responsible for their learning and develop key lifelong skills in terms of time management and organization.
Alongside my academic interests I try to keep as healthy as possible to fulfill the demands of work and being the mother of three boys. I run and am taking part once again in Houston’s half marathon in January 2015. To balance the aerobic exercise I regularly practice yoga. The theatre in Houston is far more accessible than in the UK and thus I have been able to indulge my love of ballet. I also attend the Brilliant Lecture series, the most recent being an evening with former Soviet Premier Gorbachev.
As a mother of boys I spend much time with my family in the car, driving to rugby and football, however at least here the weather makes the early matches far more enjoyable
What the students say about me
"Thank you for opening my mind."
"TOK (Theory of Knowledge) is so amazing; I will never think the same way about anything again."
"Great revision techniques and incredible patience answering constant questions."
This School is different to all others I have worked at because…
Working at the British International School of Houston is so very different than working back in the UK. There is a closeness of the staff community and our students are incredibly inclusive. The diversity of our students means that they are each so aware of the difficulties of changing school and therefore they welcome new students so warmly. The staff is truly committed to developing each child’s potential and the interest in HPL is really evident here. Colleagues motivate and support each other. I am really proud of my students and what they achieve and thoroughly enjoy every day I spend being part of their educational and social development into inspirational young adults.
