Ashley Wright

Ashley Wright Teacher of Music and Drama

Teacher of Music and Performing Arts

I fell in love with all things theatrical from a very young age. At 15 years old I successfully auditioned for the prestigious Italia Conti Academy of Theatre Arts in London and packed my bag and left the idyllic Scottish Island of Bute for the big Smoke.  I graduated in 2004 with a BA Honours degree in Performing Arts and have enjoyed a successful career as an actress before coming to Houston. On stage I have appeared in the UK tour of Anything Goes and took a lead role in the UK Premiere of Jason Robert Brown’s Parade at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival. More recently I took the role of Samantha Cameron in the satirical musical comedy Nicked.  I have had several television roles including CBBC’s M.I. High and BBC Three’s Lip Service. I have also had the honour of working in 2 feature films;  Letters to Juliet and the role of Ali in Universal Studios’ Mamma Mia! The Movie.  In between acting contracts, I have held both Music and Drama teaching positions preparing students aged 3 to 18 for exams through the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Arts (LAMDA).

My teaching in Houston has been extremely varied. My first role was leader of IB Theatre Arts and this year I have predominantly been leading Key Stage 1 Music.  I have also directed two school shows and am co–founder of the Houston Footlights Theatre Company. I am very excited to be introducing Key Stage 3 and GCSE Drama back in to the British International School of Houston curriculum.

My most satisfying and enjoyable role to date has definitely been that of mummy to my gorgeous, funny son Dexter Ray. There is nothing more fun than lazy weekends with my husband and Dex watching movies or out playing in the Houston sun.  I have an almost obsessive love of food and more often than not you will find me concocting a new recipe in the kitchen, just don’t ask me to bake!

What the students say about me...

'Mrs. Wright has consistently been one of the most enthusiastic, sincere, and dedicated teachers that I have ever had the good fortune to meet.’

‘She helps us with our music and helps us if we get something wrong’

‘Mrs. Wright has taught me invaluable dramatic technique. Conveying her extensive knowledge in a way that is understandable, approachable, and retainable.’

‘Mrs. Wright has consistently encouraged me to follow my passion for drama, and has been nothing but supportive throughout each dramatic endeavour that I have undertaken.’

This school is different to all others I have worked at because…

Teaching the pupils at the British International School of Houston is an absolute joy and pleasure.  They are such dedicated students, and even though Drama may be a completely new discipline to them and sometimes out of their comfort zone, they are forever surprising me with their ‘can do’ attitude and love of learning.

I am extremely proud to work here and continue to strive to be the best teacher that I can be.
