I graduated in 1999 from the Royal Northern College of Music and my first job as a musician was an incredible year playing in the Orchestra on the QE2. Living at sea not only gave me performance experience but I was fortunate enough to visit 50 different countries from every continent whilst sailing upon every ocean on the planet. I moved to London in 2002 and began working both as a freelance musician and as an instrumental tutor. As a trombone player, I was lucky enough to be involved in many West End and touring musicals including: War Horse, Carousel, Fiddler on the Roof, Chicago, Pricilla Queen of the Desert, Sister Act, Guys & Dolls, The Producers, and West Side Story, to name a few. I also performed regularly on the BBC shows Strictly Come Dancing and Tonight’s the Night in addition to working with the London Philharmonic, Halle, Opera North, Orchestra of the Algarve and several studio orchestras.
In 2011, I made the decision to pursue my career in education and graduated from Greenwich University before taking the position at the British International School of Houston.
I am extremely passionate that music education is a vital element in the holistic education of young people. Whilst music will unfortunately never be regarded as one of the most important subjects in a school curriculum, the opportunity, value and reward that can be achieved by young people through music must never be underestimated.
I am a very passionate musician and educator and see my vocation as not just a career but as a way of life. My love of music is matched by my love of sport and I am very proud of my FIFA coaching qualifications achieved in honour of my father who was an England National coach.
My wife and son, Dexter, give me the inspiration and enthusiasm to do everything to the best of my ability and that strive for success is something I try to encourage in my students.
What the students say about me...
"Mr. Wright makes lessons fun. He encourages us to be our best."
"He is passionate about music and teaches us in exciting ways. He is very talented."
"Mr. Wright’s lessons make a bad day feel better."
"He teaches us like an informative comedian."
This school is different to all others I have worked at because…
The key difference between the British International School of Houston and any other school I have worked in lies with the students. BISH has an enormous percentage of students who are polite, respectful, honest, well behaved and have an admirable work ethic. Regular contact with the students here inspires any teacher to be better.
