Science Week at Regents

At Regents, we believe that an education in Science is fundamentally important as it encourages students to be curious, to find out more about the world around them, to challenge what they know and to think about the future. We are looking forward to next year already and showing students across the school why success in Science equips them with skills for life.

Regents recently celebrated Science Week with a variety of exciting Science activities, aiming to promote Science as a subject across the whole school with a firm focus on fun!

The week began with Guerrilla Science. Science teachers burst into lessons to baffle students with a Science demonstration that got them thinking about what they had just seen. Miss Green challenged Elsa from Frozen as she made a liquid crystalise at the touch of a finger. Mrs Neylon performed magic, turning a colourless liquid pink, then colourless again, before finally making it disappear completely. Mr Smith mysteriously skewered a balloon without popping it, whilst Mr Butler apparently cut Daisy’s (one of our technicians) hand with a huge rusty knife! But was it really a medical emergency, or was it a simple chemical reaction involving a coloured transition metal compound….?

Students across the school also took part in a whole school experiment to discover which year group has the fastest reaction times. Upon analysis, it appears that reaction times are slowest in Reception, but quickly speed up, getting faster year by year until Year 5. After this point, there is little change in reaction speed. Students considered whether the test was valid, and thought about improvements which could be made to improve the method.

The week continued with ‘The Demo Show’, a chance for the Science team to blow some things up! Mr O’Byrne demonstrated a carbide bomb, as well as a dry ice bomb which exploded like a depth charge in a bin full of water. The students were able to try out some experiments with dry ice, observing how the carbon dioxide bubbles that form when dry ice is mixed with bubble liquid are heavier than air, and bounce on a table. Mr Smith demonstrated a mentos and coke fountain – a favourite experiment to perform at home (but make sure you do it outside!). Mr Bolland also took the chance to show students exactly why you should never put out an oil fire with water – the fireball he created clearly demonstrated how the instant evaporation of water, combined with the immiscibility of oil and water could potentially wreak havoc inside a kitchen.

On Wednesday, Mr McKenna, Miss Green and Mr Taylor hosted ‘The Big Fat Science Quiz’, a fun event which poses Biology, Chemistry and Physics based questions to House teams. Green House emerged the overall winners, gaining some much needed House points.

The activities did not stop there – the Science team filled a big paddling pool with Ooblek, an example of a non-Newtonian fluid for the student’s enjoyment on Friday. Ooblek is unusual as it behaves like a solid when swiftly compressed – allowing a person to run across it without sinking. However, if you stand on it, it becomes a liquid, and you will slowly sink, getting firmly stuck if you are unlucky! Students from Early Years, Primary and Secondary enjoyed playing around with the Ooblek, seeing if they could make it from one side of the pool to the other without sinking.

The week culminated in Science Karaoke – a chance to combine a love of Science with a love of singing, and belt out some tunes which have a Science based theme. ‘Space Oddity’, ‘The Scientist’, ‘Diamonds’. ‘Supersonic’ and ‘My Heart Will go On’ were some of the songs performed with varying degrees of success! A mention must be made to Morgan in Year 9, whose performance of ‘Titanium’ was just beautiful.
