Spelling Bee and Handwriting Challenge

As the school year draws to an end Year 7 and Year 8 have been kept busy by the English department with the introduction of a Spelling Bee and a Handwriting Challenge. As part of concerted efforts to encourage students to focus on the important skills of spelling and presentation Year 7 and Year 8 were all asked to enter both competitions.

  • Spelling Bee
  • Jung 7L
  • Handwriting
  • Warmington 8/9Ho
  • Handwriting
  • Kim 7Ro
  • Handwriting

The Handwriting Challenge had categories for cursive writing and for creative handwriting. All Year 7 and Year 8 pupils were given the exact same piece of unlined headed paper and had to write out a given quote in black ink with their name, form and the name of the writer of the quote. we are pleased to say that every single student submitted an entry and we were pleased with their efforts. The winners were:

Cursive writing - Jong Hwan Jung  (Year 7)

Creative writing - Grace Warmington  (Year 8)

Overall Best Handwriting - Gyu-Ri Kim (Year 7)

The Spelling Bee was a team effort whereby all students in years 7 and 8 were given a list of words to learn, each of which came with a definition. They then formed themselves into teams of 4 and 5 by year group and English class and we had an elimination competition in the library. Every team had two lives and a pleasing number of teams lasted several rounds. Our final three teams consisted of 1 Year 7 team and 2 Year 8 teams and sadly the Year 7 team were eliminated first. The final round between the last pair of teams was nail-biting as they got word after word correct but eventually after a sterling effort from Tom Keys, Martin Nicholson, Stanislav Vergeichyk, Noam Aviner-Vapni with support from Cheolmin Hwangbo the victors were Youjung Ahn, Lucy Kelly, Laura Bartkova and Agathe Mignot.

We are hoping that the Spelling Bee and the Handwriting Challenge will become annual events within the English department and next year we want more year groups to take part in both competitions. We, in the English department, are hoping to see big improvements in the spelling and presentation across the school as we place a greater emphasis on these valuable life skills. Congratulations to all of our winners.
