The Power of the Sun

This week, as part of their new science topic 'Light & Shadows', Year 3 have been studying the sun. We had loads of fun creating our own suns by mixing different shades of orange and yellow using powder paint. Powder paint was ideal because we could make it nice and thick to add texture to our work. We also added some sand to the paint to add a grainy detail. When it was dry we splattered our work with runnier paint and glitter to help add movement. We used glue spreaders rather than paint brushes to help with texture and movement too. In Literacy we wrote some simple sentences about the sun, we then learnt how to use a thesaurus to look up 'boring' or 'easy' words so that we could find more interesting alternatives, the new words made our sentences better.  Knowing our alphabet helped us to look up words more easily. Here are some alternative words we found:

  • Hot - boiling, scorching, blistering, fiery
  • Round - spherical, ball-like, bulbous
  • Yellow - lemon colored, mustard
  • Big - immense, almighty, massive, colossal
  • Bright - dazzling, glimmering

We added our favourite words to our paintings and used them in sentences.  We will continue to encourage the children to use a thesaurus to help them make more ambitious word choices.
