Year 3 exploring plants

Year 3 have had a lovely time exploring plants and seeds.  They have learnt about parts of the plants and the job each part does by re-potting plants to look at the roots, and taking apart flowers to explore the petals, septal, stamen and stigma.  The children really enjoyed drawing the flowers in detail, sharing their knowledge as they drew.

They have also been busy designing and carrying out fair tests.  They have learnt that flowers need soil as they didn't grow very well on tinsel or plastic cubes "There is nothing to  hold the plant up and there are no nutrients to help it grow!" (George and Oliver 3C)  They realise that plants need water to drink "The one watered with coca-cola died more quickly" (SuHyun 3C).  "The plant with no roots did not grow" (Adrian 3C) "The plant with leaves grew new leaves and taller, the plant with no leaves went brown because leaves help the plant make food" (Kayla 3C).

They have also been exploring seeds.  They collected and planted seeds from around the school and learnt about different methods of seed dispersal.  they really enjoyed making their own 'flying' seed!
