Smart technology in the classroom

Technology changes with each passing day, at rates much more rapid than in previous generations. Modern education and classrooms require the introduction of high-tech tools and equipment to provide students with a more efficient and interactive learning experience. 

Recently, the LIS IT department have been busy installing Smart TVs in classrooms to further support our student’s daily learning. Smart TV is an interactive large screen television that anyone, teacher or student, can walk up to and use, with little or no training. By using the Smart TV, teachers can use the smart hardware and software to increase student’s motivation and engagement. This next generation tool is beyond traditional interactive whiteboards, as we look to the future rather than the past.  Let’s go into our classrooms to have a closer look. 

Every morning, when Year 1A students arrive in the classroom, each student will go to the Smart TV and move their name tag on the screen. We can easily see who is present and who is not at school. Ms. Ali uses this to take classroom attendance as a daily routine and allows students to develop their maths ability in addition and subtraction.

In Year 2B, students lined up to play a multiplication game when the maths class began. Ms. Islam uses the software on the smart TV to teach a maths class. How to share 10 counters between 2 equal groups? How to share 9 counters between 3 equal groups? In this way, it can easily promote class participation among students.

Lead by Mr. McKinnon, our Year 3B students are working in four houses in the English class to play a Rhyme Challenge through the Smart TV. For the Rhyme Challenge, one person chooses a word, and the next player says as many words as he can that rhyme with that word. Our teachers not only teach the language, but also help the students to build their skills with confidence, collaboration, and communication. 

Our Year 10 students were busy figuring out polynomials and what they are used for. Learning with media and technology is helpful in capturing the attention of students.  Mr. Glowinski is working with the students to explore factorisation and quadratic equations now. The Smart TV also enables students and teachers to search and download resources online. It is much easier to appreciate the contents with this modern academic tool.
