Tom McCabe is from Ottawa, Canada. He has been teaching domestically and internationally since 2003. Tom arrived in Chengdu in August 2018 to undertake the role of Athletic Director at Léman. In addition to these duties, he teaches PHE classes at the Early Years, Primary and MYP level. Tom enjoys working with students of all ages, with an adaptable teaching personality that suits them all.

Tom studied Elementary Education at McGill University in Montreal and later achieved an Honours in Physical Education from Queen’s University in Kingston, Ontario. He taught in Canada and New Zealand before moving to Beijing in 2005. It wasn’t long before Tom knew that China would become his second home. Besides his extensive teaching experience, Tom has also done ground-breaking work in sport outside of the academic realm. He was a founder of the first International Ice Hockey club in Beijing. Tom took tremendous pride when his parents saw him coaching his team to victory in a prestigious tournament in his hometown of Ottawa in 2008. More recently, he established and created the curriculum for an ice hockey program at an elite sports academy in Beijing.

Tom loves to organize and host sporting events and tournaments. He takes great pride in our tremendous athletics facilities and loves to showcase them to different communities. During his time in Chengdu, Léman has hosted successful events at the CISA (Chengdu), ACAMIS (China) and Global Games (NAE) level.

Tom has a core belief in the transformational power of athletic pursuits. No matter an individual's passion, sport helps to develop discipline, perseverance, relationship-building and service to others. Sport inspires risk-taking, creative thinking and fosters the development of intrinsic motivation. In an increasingly sedentary society, having an affinity for health and fitness is invaluable.

Tom also believes that a person is at their best when they are well-rounded. Tom has a passion for music and art thanks to his mother. He loves to read and explore. He has an adventurous palette and believes Sichuan province has the best food in China. Tom is an avid traveller and loves to scuba dive.

It is one of Tom’s personal goals that Léman continue to be a leader in athletics in the Chengdu community and beyond for years to come.
