At Eton School we believe that learning spaces can inspire, awaken curiosity, and aid in the development of each student. That's why the recent refurbishment of the Elementary library represents so much more than just a cosmetic improvement. It was a transformation that brough to life our community of readers.
With an updated collection, new furniture, and spaces designed to respond to the needs of today's students, it has become a lively place where reading, research, and creativity come together every day.
A Space That Invites Children Back
The students' response was wonderful. Their enthusiasm for visiting the library has grown so much that we had to extend our hours and open half an hour before the start of the school day. Every morning we get early bird readers wanting to explore new books, share recommendations, and start the day learning.
What was a traditional library has now come alive and become an environment that fosters participation, the exchange of ideas, and constant discovery.
The Third Teacher
Inspired by the educational vision of Loris Malaguzzi, we see the library as a "third teacher." Spaces that are properly designed inspire questions, stimulate the imagination, and create opportunities for independent learning.
Every corner was designed to invite students to explore, investigate, and construct knowledge meaningfully. It's a space that sparks curiosity and opens doors for infinite learning possibilities.
More Than Just a Library
The Elementary library is also a recreational and cultural space where students can come and talk, work together, and share common interests.
Here, reading becomes a social experience. Students discover new stories, exchange opinions, and strengthen vital skills like communication, critical thinking, and teamwork.
At the same time, they develop reading habits that improve their personal and academic growth.
Raising Readers and Researchers for the Future
Education in the 21st Century requires much more than access to information. It requires students to be able to research, analyze different points of view, and draw their own conclusions.
That's why fostering culture and research from an early age means giving children the tools they need to thrive in a complex and constantly changing world.
In the library we seek to bolster that intellectual curiosity that drives our students to continue learning throughout their lives.
A Refuge to Discover New Worlds
Like philosopher Hans-Georg Gadamer said, "Culture is the only asset that grows when shared." This idea reflects the spirit of our library. More than a place to find books, it's a refuge for imagination, reflection, and encounters.
Every book opens a new window into the world; every conversation creates new ideas; and every visit offers the chance to learn something different.
An Invitation to Continue Exploring
The library transformation cements our commitment to an education that fosters curiosity, critical thinking, and a love of reading.
We're excited to see how this space continues to inspire our students every day and nurtures our learning community.
