Building a Better World Starts at School: Greengates’ Journey to Social Impact Gold

At Greengates School, we believe education should prepare students for far more than exams, university applications and future careers. It should help them understand the world around them, recognise their ability to shape it, and develop the confidence to take meaningful, responsible action.

 

That belief is at the heart of our journey towards Social Impact Gold, part of Nord Anglia Education’s Social Impact programme. This global initiative encourages students to explore children’s rights, the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, and the role each of us can play in creating positive change.

 

For Greengates, this is not simply an award or a badge. It is a reflection of who we are as a school: internationally minded, academically ambitious, and committed to helping students grow into thoughtful, capable and compassionate young people.

 

Having already achieved Bronze and Silver Distinctions, Greengates is now beginning the next stage of this journey: working towards Gold.

 

 

Social Impact is built around three important areas of school life:

 

Students explore children’s rights, the Sustainable Development Goals, and the local and global challenges connected to them. Through age-appropriate learning, they are encouraged to think critically, ask thoughtful questions and understand different perspectives.

 

 

Social Impact also strengthens the way we live as a community. It encourages every student to feel valued, respected and able to use their voice responsibly.

 

 

Most importantly, students are given opportunities to turn learning into action. This may happen through projects, campaigns, partnerships, student-led initiatives or contributions to the wider community.

 

 

In a world that is increasingly complex and connected, students need more than knowledge. They need empathy, resilience, collaboration, communication skills and the confidence to lead with purpose.

 

Our journey to Social Impact Gold gives students opportunities to practise these skills in meaningful ways. They learn that positive change does not always begin with a grand gesture. Sometimes, it begins with asking better questions, listening carefully, noticing a need, or taking one small step towards improving the community around them.

 

This is where Greengates’ international outlook becomes especially powerful. As a diverse school community in Mexico City, our students learn alongside peers from different cultures, languages and backgrounds. They are encouraged to see issues from both local and global perspectives, an essential part of becoming internationally minded young people.

 

As part of Nord Anglia Education, Greengates also connects this work to a wider global learning community. Students benefit from opportunities to engage with ideas, initiatives and perspectives that extend beyond one classroom or one country.

 

 

Our journey to Gold involves everyone.

 

For students, it may mean joining a Social Impact project, leading an initiative, learning more about the SDGs, or speaking up about an issue they care about.

 

For teachers, it may mean making deeper connections between their subjects and global challenges, helping students see how their learning applies to the real world.

 

For families and community members, it may mean sharing expertise, supporting projects, creating partnerships or helping students discover meaningful opportunities to make a difference.

 

Sometimes, the first step is simply becoming more aware.
