Isn’t it wonderful when children are just so full of enthusiasm and curiosity? Last week we were fortunate enough to have a visit facilitated by one of our parents by Hamad Medical Cooperation Ambulance service.

At the end of last half-term, we sent out a letter asking if you the parents would like to come in and talk to the children about your role in the uniformed service (police, fire and rescue or medical services), as we are learning all about “People who help us”.

Along with our Foundation Two trip to Ras Laffan Fire and Rescue Training College in the last week this term, we also had Paramedics and an Ambulance come into school to share what they do with the children.

Mr Schalk-Willem van der Merwe, a parent, is a critical care paramedic and offered to bring in an ambulance to school, a couple of colleagues also came along. It was great to see how much the children know. They listened to Paramedics talk about the ambulance, the equipment it has on it and what to do if you hear an ambulance, in the car, as well as the relevant emergency number 999. Just ask the children “slow down, pull over right”.

The children had the opportunity to learn about what paramedics do from resuscitation to strapping possible broken bones to putting on a neck brace to wearing gloves. They learnt that paramedic deal with medical emergencies, not minor bumps and bruises which can be dealt with at home or by going to the doctors.

A huge thank you to the team that made the visit possible to Mr Brendan Morris and Mrs Claire Selwood from the Ambulance service for coordinating and the Paramedics that came along, made it such a memorable visit for our staff and children. Thank you.

So if you are one of the great emergency workers that help others either the Police, Civil Defence (Fire & Rescue), Emergency Medical Service or any other service and could come in and talk to the children please just let us know. So the children may see what you do.

Just as a final note we have an Open Phonics session on Tuesday 4 December from 07:30 to 08:15 all welcome, please come along.

Ms Tracey Phillips and
Mr Schalk-Willem van der Merwe
