Chyavan Karthikeya, an exemplary student at NAISAK, has been selected as a member of the Student Advisory Board for Nord Anglia Education, a prestigious role that involves evaluating student-led social impact projects across international schools.
“My main role is to evaluate all the students, their grants, their projects, and to check the eligibility guidelines,” Chyavan said.
As part of the board, Chyavan reviews funding proposals submitted by students from schools around the world. His responsibilities include assessing project feasibility, impact, and financial planning before approving grants. One of the projects he evaluated focused on a social initiative in Tanzania alongside a refugee support program.
“I evaluated it and it fit all the guidelines, so I approved it to get the money and the resources they needed,” he explained.
Selection Process and Leadership Qualities
The Student Advisory Board selection process is highly competitive, with applications submitted by students from international schools globally. According to Chyavan, the process focuses strongly on trust, responsibility, and leadership.
“It’s mostly about personality more than achievements,” he said. “They care about if you’re a person they can trust, if you think reasonably and practically.”
Applicants are expected to have prior experience in social impact initiatives, along with strong communication and decision-making skills.
Representing NAISAK and the Middle East
Chyavan is the only student selected from Qatar and the Middle East, making his appointment a significant achievement for the NAISAK community. His selection highlights the school’s emphasis on student leadership, service learning, and global engagement.
“I feel really honored,” he shared. “There are tens of thousands of people applying, and being chosen is a huge responsibility.”
Teachers and mentors at NAISAK supported Chyavan through earlier leadership opportunities, including social impact projects and international learning experiences.
Commitment to Social Impact
For Chyavan, meaningful social impact depends on action rather than ideas alone.
“Planning ahead is really easy, but implementing them is a lot harder than it looks,” he said. “Implementing is the hardest part and the most important bit.”
His work at NAISAK has included organizing assemblies, workshops, awareness campaigns, and initiatives such as educating younger students about their rights on World Children’s Day.
Advice for Future Student Leaders
Chyavan encourages students interested in leadership and social impact to remain consistent and committed.
“Every little effort you do doesn’t go to waste,” he said. “Whatever you put out will come back to you. You just don’t know when.”
He emphasizes stepping outside one’s comfort zone and focusing on long-term impact rather than immediate recognition.
Looking Ahead
In his role on the Student Advisory Board, Chyavan plans to support new grant initiatives and help develop future student leaders at NAISAK, ensuring continuity in the school’s social impact programs.
“It’s a huge responsibility,” he said, “but it’s also a learning experience."
