This week, students will be taking part in discussions around this topic, raising the awareness of it within our student body.
This theme was chosen because the world is increasingly polarised, with the very wealthy becoming wealthier, and the number of people living in poverty still high. 2020 highlighted inequalities due to race, ethnicity and the lack of respect for human rights in many countries, including for people living with mental health conditions.
Stigma and discrimination towards those with mental health issues is one key reason for these inequalities. Almost 9 out of 10 people with mental health problems say that the stigma surrounding mental health has a negative impact on their education, work and personal lives. The stigma around mental health can make it more difficult for those having difficulties to seek help.
This World Mental Health Day, we can work towards ending the stigma around mental health, opening up conversations and normalising the discussion of mental health and wellbeing in our classrooms.
