We Salute You! A Poem by Mayar (Y4)

The challenges of the current pandemic have touched us all in different ways, although none of us have escaped its grasp. Some of us are fortunate enough to safely work from home, others are in fear of losing their jobs, or struggling with constant worry about family and friends we can’t be with. In the midst of everything, it is our frontline workers who are tirelessly protecting the rest of us.

Everyone from healthcare professionals, to our police force, shop assistants, cleaners, delivery drivers and security staff, to name just a few; all have stepped up in the face of fear and adversity and are serving their communities like never before. The pandemic has highlighted the important role of these professions in our communities, and we are all grateful for their hard work and dedication.

In support of our amazing frontline workers, Nord Anglia International School Al Khor’s Year 4 student Mayar has created a video which she hopes will reach as many of these heroes as possible.

As Mayar explains, “I was sitting with my father and we were talking about how hard my aunt is working to test COVID samples in the lab back home in Oman. My father knows I love video editing so he suggested I make a video as a thank you for her hard work… so I sat with my parents and we decided to do it for the whole world and thank all the heroes.”

It took Mayar three weeks to collect the videos from each of the people she highlighted, as well as writing and editing the poem “I Salute You”.

When asked how she has been feeling during her time at home, she explained that it’s been fun as she has been kept busy with various activities and swimming. “I feel a little sad as I can’t see my friends and can’t go visit my family in Oman and can’t go out”, but she also observed that “spending more time with my family is the best part of staying home”. This is a sentiment expressed by many around the world; that even during these very difficult times, spending more time with family has been an unexpected benefit of the current situation.

Mayar’s video serves to inspire us all, and we join her in saluting our wonderful frontline workers, without whom the challenges of this current pandemic would undoubtedly have proven even more trying.

In her parting message to you all, Mayar encourages everyone to “Stay home and keep safe… help your family and friends always!” Definitely important sentiments at this time.

You can watch Mayar’s video here (which already has almost 600 views!), and read the full poem below. Be sure to pass on your own thanks to the hardworking front line workers in your own community, wherever that might be.
