SKC Has Empathy for People Who have Challenges in their Daily Lives

In the lead up to our STEAM challenge day called Medical Marvels, SKC learned about how some people need to do things differently.

We realise that no one has anything ‘wrong’ with them, but they will need to work out how to do some things in their daily lives differently to how we in SKC might do.  A lot of people need some help with things sometimes, for example, if they have to be in a wheelchair or if they cannot see or hear.

We read a book called No So Different.  The SKC teachers, Ms Lynne and Ms M, were really amazed by how much empathy their students showed towards someone who had a physical disability.  The children were curious, of course, but genuinely wanted to know some things about this boy and how he managed to do things.

We looked at how a very clever artist needs to put a paint brush in her mouth to paint her pictures because she had an accident and can’t use her arms or her legs.  We then tried to use a marker to write our name and it was very, very difficult to do!

We felt what it was like to not be able to see and to rely on someone else to walk us around the classroom safely.

It turns out that people who need to wheel themselves in a wheelchair all the time have to have very strong arms!!
