Grade 6 Individuals and Societies (I and S) have been moving mountains these last few weeks to make sure their summative assessment projects were ready. On Tuesday, April 29th they presented their 3D dioramas about a mountain of their choice, explaining why they chose it and why it has such a profound influence on the world. Choices ranged from Mount Fuji in Japan to Kilimanjaro in Tanzania. It was an uplifting experience for all the model makers and even the students who came to hear their presentations and cast their votes for the best display. The winner – as voted by the visiting students and teachers - was about the mighty El Capitan in the USA, which is recognized as one of hardest mountains in the world to climb. Diego and Daniel’s (shown in picture above) decision to use Virtual Reality glasses to help students – and Mr. Watkins – feel what it is really like to climb the sheer granite wall was a stroke of genius and left them on cloud nine!Th The Th !

Grade 7 I and S have been exploring, researching and debating whether climate change is a real challenge for us in the 21st century, or just a lot of hot air. Their extended end of unit essays may have been getting them hot under the collar recently, but once they were handed in they were able to let off steam. Phew!

Grade 9 have been back in time these last few months to visit the interwar years between 1918 to 1939. Areas of interest were the Weimar Republic of 1920s Germany, the roaring 1920s of the USA and later the rise of the Nazis in Germany. This study culminated with students designing, researching and making a brochure for an imaginary travel company that would guide people to see places of interest in these places. Finally Grade 10 have been studying about 21st century challenges, which we all as a global community face this century. These included space exploration, climate change, the dark side of the Internet and the rise of artificial intelligence. Some of our students are now experts on the specialized subjects they chose to write essays about, so look out for them in the future on TV and social media, hopefully making the world a better place for us all to live in.
