In the highly competitive admissions season this year, Phuong Nghi (Nancy), a Year 13 student at BVIS, has continuously received good news of admission from top universities in the United States, especially from her dream school - University of Pennsylvania. As one of the 8 Ivy League schools, UPENN is also ranked as the 6th best university in the United States according to the 2024 university rankings by US News.

Possessing outstanding leadership qualities along with admirable academic achievements, Phuong Nghi has successfully impressed the admissions boards of many universities in the United States and the United Kingdom when applying for Computer Science majors at institutions such as the University of Denver, Georgia Institute of Technology, Fordham University, University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, University of Michigan, University of Manchester, University of Edinburgh, Northeastern University, and especially the University of Pennsylvania (UPenn) - one of the prestigious Ivy League universities.

Among these successes, she managed to persuade the University of Denver and Fordham University to generously offer her two scholarships worth $132,000 and $400,000 respectively, equivalent to nearly 13.5 billion VND.

With outstanding extracurricular records and academic achievements, it's no surprise that the admissions boards of 9 universities have decided to select and extend offers to Phuong Nghi:

  • Co-President of the Student Council at BVIS for the academic year 2023-2024
  • Achieved the Top in Vietnam in AS Level Computer Science under the Cambridge Outstanding Achievement Award
  • Co-founder of the non-profit project Fin N Luxe - Winner of the FOBISIA Student Leadership Conference Race4Good challenge 2023
  • Successfully organized and led the first TEDx BVIS HCMC Youth event at BVIS
  • Scored 4 A grades in Economics, Physics, Mathematics, and Computer Science AS Level exams
  • Scored 8.0 in the IELTS exam and 1540 in the SAT assessment
  • Worked with the AI speaking app SpeakLab and Avocado Prep
  • Won the Elite Award in the Hack2ber Coding Challenge 2022, Gold Award in the UKMT Maths Competition 2023

Pursuing Computer Science major - a field traditionally thought to be for males, Phuong Nghi shared: "While being a volunteer tutor in an orphanage, I have witnessed the inconveniences children faced due to the lack of learning resources and competent teachers. Hence, I am driven to initiating low-cost technology solutions to enhance their education experience. With that goal in mind, I would want to pursue an engineering/computer science major at university.”

To achieve this dream and equip herself with the necessary knowledge for university, Nancy opted for four A Level subjects at BVIS including Economics, Physics, Mathematics, and Computer Science, and achieved excellent academic results in all four subjects in the AS Level international exams in the summer of 2023.

Understanding that success in this logical and "dry" subject requires more than just studying theory at school with guidance from subject teachers, Nancy actively practiced more by participating in numerous programming competitions, developing and owning four different applications and websites, working at SpeakLab (AI speaking app) and in the product development department of Avocado Prep. Nancy also shared that despite the challenging A Level subjects, she found the journey of studying this international program very interesting and enjoyable.

In addition to her outstanding academic record, Nancy is also known for her prominent roles at BVIS: Co-President of the Student Council for the academic year 2023-2024, Environmental Committee Chair, Ha Noi Head Student. With her excellent leadership talent and organizational skills, Phuong Nghi has successfully led the Student Council to implement many projects, activities, events, and large-scale competitions that have resonated in the school community, such as TEDx BVISHCMC Youth.

Aiming to impress the university admissions boards in her main essay, Nancy chose to go for a creative route of using an extended metaphor to describe her personal development journey. Specifically, she presented profound views on the value of Global Citizenship and expressed her gratitude for all the experiences and opportunities she has had throughout her learning journey. Not only passionate about natural sciences, Nancy also demonstrated her social artistic aspect in her essay by analyzing how she overcame stage fright and embraced her deep voice when it came to singing, the link between the art of collage and collaboration, shared her love with teaching and passion to achieve the UNICEF's Sustainable Development Goals of Quality Education.

"If I were to describe the learning environment in three words, it would be: energetic, lively and open-minded. BVIS has offered me lots of opportunities to explore my passion. With the connection that the school has established within Nord Anglia Education, I have had the opportunity to connect with friends from different nations, thereby gaining new knowledge and getting closer to becoming a global citizen. I believe that it is the intellectual curiosity that BVIS tries to foster in me and the various opportunities that BVIS has offered for me to explore my potential that has helped me to be who I am now today.”

Congratulations Nancy!
