Head of Chemistry, TOK and IBH Form Tutor

After graduating from Aston University in Birmingham with a Bsc (Hons) in Applied Chemistry,  I spent eleven years working as an industrial chemist before retraining as a chemistry teacher. Fifteen years after that decision, I still feel just as passionate about teaching and I hope that my time in industry helps to add a different dimension to my lessons, making science relevant and fun.

My first five years as a teacher were spent at an inner city school in Stoke-on-Trent, and this was followed by two years as head of junior science at a coeducational boarding school in the English countryside. Now, after seven years as an international teacher, initially as head of science in Penang, Malaysia and for the last five years in El Salvador, Central America, I am beginning to consider myself an experienced IB chemistry teacher. In addition to teaching IB chemistry I have also taught TOK, IB physics, IGCSE chemistry and physics and general science at KS3. I am also a qualified rugby coach and have coached athletics.

I am the father of a young son, so most of my leisure time is spent with my family. Any remaining time is spent reading - particularly crime novels, science fiction and travelogues – or cooking. I love to travel, and have travelled independently in many countries, most recently in Central America and before that South East Asia.

I am looking forward to being able to explore Slovakia and central Europe, being closer to home so that my son can get to know his extended family better and to being a member of a smaller family friendly school.
