When I was 14 I decided I wanted to be a Plant Scientist but strangely it was during a Geography lesson that my interests were first sparked. Sure enough, I studied Plant Science at Edinburgh University before going on to do a PhD at the University of East Anglia. I then took up a research job back at Edinburgh University and soon realised that what I particularly enjoyed was not the research but the teaching that went with it. So, at the end of my contract, I changed careers and have not looked back.
Outside of school I love to travel, see new places, meet new people and experience new things. I enjoy trekking and hill-walking and generally just being in the wilderness. I am really excited to be coming to Slovakia for the opportunities this will present for travelling around Eastern Europe. At the British School Manila I set up and ran the Duke of Edinburgh International Award and saw it grow from 10 students doing Bronze in my first year to over 50 doing Silver and Bronze this year.
What my students say about me:
"Mr. Tibbits always encouraged me to do my best in biology by emphasising the importance of understanding over memorisation. He used inventive ways to teach us complicated topics or concepts - whether it be diagrams or acronyms - which aided greatly in my understanding of the subject. Outside of biology, Mr. Tibbits is a great teacher overall due to the mutual respect he establishes between him and his students, and his genuine care for each and every one of them. "
"Mr. Tibbits also allowed me to discover the wonders of hiking through his Duke of Edinburgh program in BSM. Mr. Tibbits was tireless during expeditions and always had something to say about the surroundings."
"Overall, Mr Tibbits is a type of teacher that students can look up to, a teacher that brings about a yearning to learn and a teacher that leaves a lasting impression on all his students."
"I have noticed that the ease at which he interacts with students makes it quite easy to forget that he has a PHD. We are quickly reminded of this fact, however, when we are hustled through each IB biology topic."
"Mr. Tibbits was BSM's go to teacher for both biology and also someone to talk to. He loves his subject, teaching his subject, and those he teaches it to."
"Mr. Tibbits is someone that everyone feels comfortable coming to for support or a good laugh, and also knows about everyone's strengths and weaknesses, helping us through difficulties in a supportive way that allows us to have fun and learn at the same time"
