Jayne Freeman

Head of Secondary EAL, Head of English Additional Language Support and 7F Form Tutor

My original career path was as a secondary Modern Languages Teacher, teaching German and French.  I completed a BA in German and French at the University of Manchester, before moving on to King’s College, London University, to achieve a PGCE. After initially working in Surrey and London, a move to the north of England with my family led to work with North Yorkshire Local Authority, retraining as a primary teacher.

I became involved in English as an Additional Language work in 1999, and have worked in this field ever since.

From 2002 to summer 2013 I worked throughout North Yorkshire as an EAL Advisory Teacher providing support to primary and secondary schools, and also to pupils and families, in the quest for excellent outcomes for EAL pupils. I gained a TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) certificate from the Trinity College, London University, in 2007.

My love of travel and my interest in other cultures led me to apply for this post at the International School of Bratislava. I was confident and successful in my post in North Yorkshire, but felt that I would like to begin to spread my expertise still further.

I have started to work for Nord Anglia and come to live in Bratislava leaving behind my two adult children. I have a son who is an electrician and a daughter who is a nuclear physicist, so both in very different fields to my Arts background.

They are both interested in travel and relish the prospect of having second homes in the centre of Europe. Bratislava is an excellent base for travelling and visiting Austria, Hungary, Poland and the Czech Republic. The city is a secure, warm and welcoming place to live, it offers endless cultural opportunities at very reasonable prices. Apart from visiting the theatre, ballet and opera, my interests include travelling and discovering the world in my motorhome, walking my Border Collie dog, and photography.

What the students say about me

Having consulted with my students as to their thoughts on our lessons, these are some of the comments:

“I like this lesson. I don’t have any problem in this lesson.”

‘I like you, you teach well.”

“ I think you have very nice lessons because our lessons are funny.”

“ I am happy to study with Ms Freeman, I like her as a teacher.”

Comment from one older student to his parent at parents’ evening:

“This is Ms Freeman, she is a very good teacher.”
