Our School Day

Find out how a typical day at our school looks like.

The Primary School Day

Dolinského Campus - Nursery

The school day begins at 8:30 but children can be dropped off from 8:05. We have flexibility with the drop off time to allow for siblings to be taken to Peknikova first. We also have an option for early drop off at Dolinskeho from 7:45, but this must be by arrangement with the class teachers as we have a limit to the number of children we can cater for at this time.

In Nursery children have access to snacks until 10:30, lunch is served at 12 o’clock after which there is an option for children to sleep.

The normal school day finishes at 14:45, when bus children collect the bus. Other children are offered an end-of-day snack and can stay in our after school Rockets club for any length of time until 17:00 (16:00 on Fridays), parents should notify staff if their child will be staying after school, indicating what time their child will be picked up, to ensure we have the appropriate number of staff available. Children can also be signed up to one of our enrichment clubs (see later section).

Children at Peknikova Campus - Reception and Year 1 - 6

  • Start of Day:

Reception & Year 1

All children are expected to be in class by 08:15. Children arriving with their parents or an older sibling can be accompanied to the new Early Years Centre between 7:50 and 8:10, ready to be in their classes for 8:15. After hanging up their coats and changing their shoes, they will be supervised upstairs in the clubroombeforeschoolstarts. Children arriving on the bus will be taken to the Early Years Centre by a member of staff or school prefect, it is a short walk from the car park where the bus comes, across the 4, 5, 6 playground to get to the new building.

Year 2 – 6

All children are expected to be in class by 08:15. They should be dropped off via the gates into the Year 4/5/6 playground (please note this is a change from 2015/16) between 07:50 and 08:05. A TLA, a teacher and a supervisor are on duty on the playgrounds from 07:50. Children are expected to wait in the playground until 08:05 when they will line up and go to into school: first to the cloakrooms and then up to their class. In the event of extreme weather, students will be allowed to wait in the dining hall until it is time to go to their class. Children should not be playing on the climbing equipment before school for safety reasons.

  • Late Arrival

In case of a late arrival to school (after 08:10) all students must report to the school office staff.

  • Morning Snack and Playtime (30 min) 10:15 – 10:45

All students have a morning break where they eat snack and then have the opportunity to play outside. Children should bring a healthy snack and drink (except for: Nursery, Reception and Year 1 children who order school lunch when a morning and an afternoon snack is provided). Children are able to eat snack in the canteen area or outside. All children will finish their snack and go outside by 10:30 as we believe it is essential to have fresh air and a morning play outside. Reception and Year 1 children will play in the space by the new Early Year’s Centre, Years 2 & 3 in the playground closest to the front office, and Years 4, 5 & 6 in the playground nearest to the Early Years Centre, taking advantage of the new grassy space made available this year. The students are supervised at all times by 3 staff on each playground.

  • Lunch and Playtime (60 min) 12:15 – 13:15

All students have 60 minutes for lunch and playtime. A hot school lunch is provided or students can bring their own packed lunch. Children in Reception and Year 1 will have their lunch in the Early Years Centre. The lunch times for children from Year 2- Year 6 are staggered to avoid canteen congestion.

Information about the school catering company and school lunch systems is given in a later section. All children are supervised and supported during lunchtime to help them develop good eating habits and table manners. Children are encouraged to eat but we will never force a child to eat. Class teachers will always inform parents if we have concerns about children’s eating. Playtimes are supervised in a similar way to morning play, students are encouraged to use playtime toys and can opt to play football on the ‘astro-turf’ pitch from 12:45.

The number of children using the climbing frames is limited by using high visibility bibs to prevent the area becoming over-crowded and unsafe. The School Council organise for there to be balls skipping ropes, hoops and other equipment available to play with - students do not bring their own balls. The School Council also appoint children to act as ‘ABCs’ on the playground, their job is to help children who have no one to play with or to help resolve disputes.

  • Wet/Cold Weather Policy

We believe that all children need to have plenty of fresh air and exercise and so all children are expected to go outside at break time and lunchtimes. Children will only remain inside if it is raining or there is exceptionally cold weather. Occasionally, we may also keep children inside if we feel the playground surfaces are dangerously wet or snowy.

  • End of Day Collection

Reception & Year 1

Parents are invited to collect Reception & Year 1 children from their classrooms in the Early Years Centre from 14:45, so they can then collect older children from the playground or younger children from Nursery afterwards. There is also an after school care facility that runs from 15:00 until 17:00 (16:00 on Fridays). Parents should notify teachers if their child will be staying after school, indicating what time their child will be picked up, to ensure we have the appropriate number of staff available to supervise. Children can also be signed up to one of our enrichment clubs (see later section).

Year 2-6

The school day ends at 15:00. Students who are not attending an after-school enrichment club will be signed out on the 1/2/3 Playground. We ask parents to please wait outside until the class teacher brings the class into the playground to their designated class area to prevent congestion in the corridors. In exceptionally, bad weather children will be collected from the dining hall.

Parents meet their children on the playground and must sign the form held by the class teacher, alternatively parents can complete a ‘Permission Form’ to allow their child to leave school unaccompanied or supervised by an older sibling. These ‘Permission’ forms are available from the front office. Children with parental ‘Permission’ are expected to leave the premises to meet their parents at an agreed location and not to play on school grounds unsupervised. If children are collected by a secondary sibling they must leave school together. Primary children cannot be left unsupervised while the older sibling attends an enrichment activity.

If you require your child to go home with another child or another adult, please inform the school office in advance.

  • After School Enrichment Clubs

We run a wide range of Enrichment clubs every term the details of which are issued via email at the start of each term, parents sign their children up for clubs on line. Clubs run from 15:00 – 16:00. We run 30 weeks of clubs throughout the year, which means that there are a few weeks at the beginning and end of each term when clubs do not run, clubs which teachers run will be cancelled on parents’ evenings.

The Secondary School Day

  • Start of Day:

Registration with form tutors is at 08:05 followed by the first lesson at 08:20. The academic day is from 08:05 until 15:45 on Monday to Wednesday and until 14:45 on Thursday and Friday. Periods are one hour long, with a few double lessons. There is a 30-minute morning break at 10:15. Secondary lunch starts at 12:45 and lasts until 13:45.

  • Late Arrival

In case of a late arrival to school (after 08:05) all students must report to the school office staff for the registration.

  • Lunch  (60 min) 12:45 – 13:45
  • Timetable

Timetables exist for all classes and you should have a personal copy for your child’s class. The timetable runs over a two week period, so it is important that your child knows which week is operating and that they have the right books and materials for that week. The alternate weeks are labelled A and B and will be clearly signalled in school, starting the year with week A.

  • Extracurricular activities

There is an extensive range of extra-curricular activities running at lunch times and after school hours from 15:45 – 16:45 on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and 14:45 – 15:45 on Thursday, Friday. Details are issued during the first week of each term. There are a number of clubs which run outside these times including weekends.
