Megan K

Early Years Teacher (EY1 Bunnies) & Foundation Stage Leader

I began my interest in teaching at a very young age and worked through school with the aim to be a teacher of young children. I attended Bath College of Higher Education for 4 years and happily qualified with a BA (Hons) QTS. I then worked in a primary school outside Bath for 3 years teaching Reception and Year 1 children. I thoroughly enjoyed this job and the school was a great start to my teaching career. During the holidays I ran sports camps for primary aged children, too. I then took a career break to travel for a year, the first place I visited being Thailand. When I returned to England and worked for a year I heard Thailand calling me! So I applied for and was offered a job at St. Andrews. That was in 2001.

The school was a very different place to what it is now, with only 150 students. The school’s appeal for me joining and staying for so many years has been the wonderful, warm and friendly community I have become part of. Being so far from home, this is such an important part of my life and St. Andrews has become my second family. The weather and the lovely surroundings help as well. Since joining the school I have taught Year 2, Year 1, Nursery and Kindergarten. My career has grown as well as the school and I have been a Humanities Coordinator, Maths Coordinator and now I am the Early Years Coordinator. My most recent professional achievement has been to become a qualified swimming instructor with an additional babies and toddlers certificate.

I am a mum to two beautiful, bright girls and my husband Steve is a Year Leader in KS2. As a family we all love to travel and on our most recent trips we have enjoyed visiting Japan, Isaan, Khao Lak, France, Hong Kong and Singapore. I like to keep active during the week and like to play tennis, keep fit with some Muay Thai kickboxing and of course I love swimming too. Since becoming a mum I like to cook healthy food for my family and more recently I have learned to sew.

The school has a wonderful community feeling where familiar faces greet each other every day. I am so lucky to see some of the first children I taught now graduating and joining universities. The inclusive policy allows the school to reflect real society, which is vital to develop children’s understanding of the wider community knowing that we live in a diverse world. The school’s facilities continue to grow to reflect the needs of the children and the curriculum we teach. The best resource we have is the teaching and support staff, who are incredibly professional and all have the children’s learning and development constantly at the forefront of their minds.
