I have now been teaching different combinations of Geography, History, Maths and Theory of Knowledge for 20 years, in schools in London, Bangkok and Ho Chi Minh City. Since my second year of teaching I have also had additional responsibilities, beginning as PSHE Coordinator and Assistant Head of Year in London, spending six years as Head of Year (moving with the students from Years 8-13) at Bangkok Patana School and then six years as Deputy Head (Pastoral) at the British International School, Vietnam.
I returned to Bangkok, and joined St. Andrews, four years ago as Deputy Head (Curriculum), attracted by the supportive and happy atmosphere, both for me and for my son, who is now in Year 4. For the last two years I have been Head of High School, and I am both very proud of what we have all achieved over the last four years and determined that the High School continues to get better every year.
I spend far too much time outside school thinking about Education, either reading books or articles, on Twitter or as part of my studies for an MA in International Education. I also love to read books about topics related to Geography and TOK, which between them cover most of the world, to watch films and to watch Arsenal win.
St. Andrews is both the only school that I have worked at that has the conviction to include the word "happy" on its Mission Statement, and the best school I know – a view shared by many recent visitors – in terms of really living its Mission Statement. Here, teachers, parents and students share a belief that happy and supported students can challenge themselves, and make amazing progress, both in and out of the classroom.
"Mr. Roo makes everything, even topics that are potentially boring, interesting and fun!"
"I would especially like to thank Mr. Roo for making me love Theory of Knowledge. May the TOK be with us!"
