Languages - Curriculum

We offer a variety of language options for students. We fully understand that we are an international School, and we have an obligation to help support develop the multilingual abilities of our students.

Chinese

Chinese is taught as a specialist lesson to our students from Nursery through to Year 6. Within their year group children are grouped according to their language ability allowing for targeted teaching and learning to take place. For absolute beginners of Chinese, students begin to learn basic greetings as well as everyday words and phrases they can use when out and about in the city. For children who are already fluent in Chinese, there is a greater focus of learning Chinese literature and character writing. Throughout the year students are also able to celebrate Chinese cultural events and activities, our main annual celebration being Chinese New Year. This is a fantastic time to be living in China and to learn the traditions of Spring Festival and is an event we thoroughly enjoy at school.

English as an Additional Language

For students who join us with limited English we are able to provide English as an Additional Language (EAL) from Year 1 to Year 6. Children whose first language is not English, are assessed on application to the school by one of our experienced EAL teachers, who is then able to determine the level of support required. EAL lessons can take the form of intensive one to one or one to two sessions, small groups, or as in class support. The EAL teachers work with students until they feel they have a good fluency of English to access the curriculum.

Mother Tongue provision

As of September 2013 we have been able to provide German lessons to our native German speakers. This is a new addition to the curriculum and takes place during the school day for 3 hours a week. Students study reading and writing as well as spoken German in order to maintain their mother tongue.
