AISA Math Conference - Update from IB CAS Student

Update from: Sumin Kang, Year 12 IB CAS Student

AISA stands for Association of International School in Asia. This year The British School of Beijing (BSB) joined and hosted the AISA Math Mania and Leadership Conference for the first time. Other ASIA Schools included Korean International School (KIS), Seoul International School (SIS), Senri and Osaka International School (SOIS) and Yokohama International School (YIS). Harrow International School Beijing (HISB) was also invited as a participating guest school.

On Thursday, I meet my host student at school for the competition. Basically, it was my first time to do home stay. I was nervous about doing a home stay and meeting a new friend. My host student was Emily, a Japanese girl who came from SOIS and we were the same age. When we met, we needed to wait for the school bus to go home. During this time, Emily and I talked with each other. We had a lot of common factors such as IB, sports and Korean drama. Therefore, we could get close with each other really easily.

On the second day, the AISA Math Mania and Leadership Challenge started. I participated in the Maths competition with another 4 BSB students. We spent the whole day solving maths questions individually and as a team. It was my first time that I solved maths questions within a team and solved it together. It was really interesting and it helped to inspire me to study harder and to become involved in these kinds of activities. In the evening, , we ate dinner together with other BSB students and their hosts, and spent time at a restaurant in Wangjing. We talked a lot and obtained some information about each other and shared some useful information with each other.

On Saturday, after we finished the maths and leadership competition we went to Tiananmen Square. Actually, it was my first time to go there. Other students and I looked around and tried some Chinese food such as ramp and scorpion. No one could try scorpion but everyone said that it was a great experience. After that, all the participants had a gala dinner together and joined the awards ceremony.  When we were having dinner, we had conversations about what we have done for the last three days. Everyone said that it was a really amazing few days and we were glad to know each other. Even though it was only for a few days, everyone believed that it was a good experience.

By participating in this activity, I believed that I learnt many things. In the aspect of maths, I was motivated by other students from Korea and Japan who were outstanding.  They inspired and motivated me to study the subject. Also, by doing home stay hosting, it provided me with a chance to make new friends and shared good memories with her. This opportunity was really impressive and I wish to take part in next year’s competition in Japan.
