Our students in Year 6 demonstrated their creative and artistic abilities as they delved into the world of Peking Opera masks. The end of our Ming and Qing unit culminated in Year 6, exploring both the art form's rich cultural significance and the creative process behind designing and painting intricate masks.
Students not only had the opportunity to design their own masks but also carefully planned the colours they would use. Each colour holds a special meaning in traditional Peking Opera, symbolising character traits and emotions. By thoughtfully selecting their colours, Year 6 deepened their understanding of the art form and its symbolism. They also had the opportunity to use various apps to digitilise their designs and experiment with colour combinations.
Once their designs were finished, Year 6 used various brushes and paints to bring them to life, showcasing their creativity and attention to detail. This hands-on experience honed their artistic skills and developed a deeper appreciation for cultural traditions. Learning through art allows students to express themselves and encourages them to explore new perspectives and ways to share their understanding.
It was a great way to end a fantastic six weeks of learning about traditional Chinese History.
