Our Visual Arts Exhibition Opening Ceremony was a huge success!  BSB is delighted to present this special exhibition to the Beijing community featuring our students’ work in the renowned 798 Art District.

Students, parents, teachers and friends came together for this fantastic celebration at the ArtDepot Gallery on 11th April. Everyone was really impressed with the artwork of our talented BSB IB Diploma Visual Arts students, IGCSE Art and Design students, and Primary and Secondary students.

Our Year 13 Visual Arts students exhibited their work and discussed their curatorial rationale with visitors to the exhibition. This exhibition is part of the formal assessment requirements of the IB Diploma.

Let’s hear from our IB Diploma Visual Arts Students:

Claire: Through the past week, I learnt the significance of cooperating with people from different fields of expertise (exhibition space staff, workers, teachers, etc.), and the importance of reflecting and working together with peers. The opening day was especially encouraging for all of us as artists, it was really meaningful to talk about our art pieces with others and receiving a lot of positive feedback on our exhibition.

Jessica: Through setting up my art exhibition, I have gained first-hand understanding in communicating and discussing my works to others and getting positive feedback and critics. This has been a valuable experience in planning different components surrounding the exhibition time-effectively.

Michelle: Throughout this experience, I understood the process of organising an exhibition, and I also felt deeply about the communication with the audience.

Alongside our IBDP visual artists' work, the fantastically creative pieces of our students in Key Stage 3 and 4 and the primary school were exhibited. They were thought-provoking and linked to the sustainable development goals.

Global Campus Art Competition – World Ocean Day

The work of the primary students showcased selected entries from the Global Campus 2023-24 Art Competition. It celebrated World Ocean Day and highlight the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 6: Water and Sanitation. We have selected 11 pieces of amazing art from all the KS1 and 2 entrants to be exhibited. The standard was extremely high, and the judging panel found it extremely difficult to choose the final selection. All the chosen pieces of work were completed by students in their own time outside of school which shows the enthusiasm and dedication of our Primary students in their pursuit of artistic studies. The artwork was chosen for the creative use of recycled materials and the uniqueness of the artwork itself.

Fish Project

Our Year 7 students have ingeniously crafted these exquisite fish assemblage masterpieces using discarded objects that have long surpassed their prime. Inspired by the art of Stefano Pilato, these objects, once devoid of purpose, have now been revitalized and transformed into vibrant, playful fish sculptures, brimming with life and colours. Through their exploration of the design principle of "Unity," our students have skillfully combined seemingly unrelated pieces, relying on their intuition and boundless creativity. Utilizing a diverse range of materials such as cardboard, foam boards, old brushes, screws, keyboards, chains, mesh wire, buttons, glass tiles, and various overlooked trinkets, our students have breathed new life into these forgotten treasures, employing paint and spray paint to further enhance their aesthetic appeal.

Coral Reef

Our Year 8 students created a large plaster sculpture that symbolizes climate change using the delicate beauty of marine life. Each corner of the sculpture was inspired by the stunning yet fragile nature of coral reefs, serving as a reminder of the dangers caused by human activities. The creation process involved a significant amount of time and dedication from the students, starting with initial sketches and culminating in a base made from wire mesh and carefully coated with plaster fabric. Collaborative group efforts were also put forth to ensure the visual consistency of the entire reef.

Throughout the project, students researched the UN Sustainable Development Goals, particularly focusing on Goal 6 - Clean Water and Sanitation, Goal 13 - Climate Action, and Goal 14 - Life Below Water. Through their exploration, students gained a deeper understanding of water pollution and the realization that pollution is the cumulative result of countless small actions taken by individuals every day, gradually eroding the beauty of marine life and coral reefs.

A huge thanks to Ms. Serena Zhang and the ArtDepot Gallery for their generous support.

Congratulations to all our students and teachers who worked incredibly hard to mount this stunning exhibition and celebration of student learning.

About the BSB Curriculum:

The IGCSE Art and Design course aims to stimulate the student's imagination, sensitivity, conceptual thinking, powers of observation and analytical ability. Students gain confidence and enthusiasm as they develop technical skills in two and three dimensional form and composition, and are able to refine their ideas in visual and sculptural forms.

The IB Diploma Visual Arts course encourages student to challenge their own creative and cultural expectations and boundaries, while working towards technical proficiency and confidence as art makers. It allows students to go on further studies in any of the visual arts, design, fashion or media courses in university.
