On the weekend of 29th/30th January, a group of Year 11 and Year 12 students took part in a Camping , First Aid and Map Skills course as part of their training for the International Silver Award programme. After school, on Friday, the students were involved in putting up tents, cooking their own meals using camping stoves, map skills and a course on what equipment to bring on future camping trips. It was impressive to see the meals the students had prepared. They spent the night camping in the gym.
The students were then woken up at 6.45 and after a making their own breakfast and taking down their tents they underwent morning courses in First Aid (that covered basic hiking ailments and medical emergencies) and a course in map route planning. All the students showed a willingness to learn and enthusiasm and are now prepared for future camping trips that will take place in April and June.
Finally, a big thank you to all staff who helped over the weekend – Ms Usher, Mr Readdy and Miss Hemming.
