Laura Towell

I truly believe in the benefits physical education has to offer young people, as it connects with their physical, mental and social wellbeing in a way no other subject can, and correlates exactly with the official definition of health.

I was born in Dublin, Ireland and lived there with my parents, sister and two brothers until I moved to Kuwait at age nine. I attended The British School of Kuwait for my Secondary School education, after which I moved to Manchester for three years to complete my bachelor of arts degree in sport science and dance at Manchester Metropolitan University. After graduation, I moved to Liverpool for a year and completed my postgraduate certificate in education in physical education and dance in at Liverpool John Moores University. I then took a year to travel around Australia and some of Asia, which was one of these most amazing experiences of my life.

My first teaching role was at Sarah Bonnell School in London, where I was employed as a Physical Education Teacher and Dance Specialist. Over the four year period I spent with the school I was promoted a number of times to Deputy Curriculum Leader for Physical Education, Behavior Management Mentor and then Curriculum Leader for Physical Education. I took a General Certificate of Secondary Education (GCSE) Physical Education group, and also set up GCSE Dance in the school, running it as an extracurricular GCSE for six students which proved to be very successful.  I also choreographed dances for three school productions and thoroughly enjoyed being involved. I moved to Chicago to begin my role as Secondary PE Teacher with great excitement.

Outside of work I enjoy going to the gym and being part of a sports team, depending on the season. I also love to travel and explore the world as frequently as possible. My family and friends are very important to me, and I very much enjoy spending time with them and socializing in a variety of ways. I absolutely love to dance and will never stop! During my down time I enjoy reading crime novels, playing my clarinet and watching romantic films (yes, I love The Notebook). I am also terrified of birds.
