Denis Renshall Smith

Having qualified as a teacher from University of Cambridge in 1999, Denis spent six years teaching Drama, English and EAL in the Channel Islands and in London schools. Eventually, his deep love of travel and culture caught up with him. An eternal student himself, he has continued post-graduate study and has become a licensed teacher trainer and expert in EAL.

Three years as EAL Coordinator in a multi-ethnic London school, and two years as Head of EAL in Thailand, led to his decision to move to China. Continued research showed Denis that Nord Anglia Education was an innovative and forward thinking family of premium International Schools globally, and this led to his current role at NAIS Pudong where he is delighted to work with such a rich and diverse mix of students and staff alike.

As a natural adventurer, Denis’ interests all revolve around discovery and pushing boundaries. He trained to be PADI Rescue Diver in 2005 and has since dived in some of the world’s most remote and pristine places; combined with hiking and culture, it is a match made in heaven. A keen swimmer who engaged competitively at school age, Denis enjoys supporting the NAIS Tigers in their local fixtures. He loves football but is much better at watching than playing, with the English Premier League being his favourite. Denis’ other interests and skills are drawing, painting and theatre set design.
