Week Beginning 5 December 2016

Please note that the ECA/BISCAP programme finishes this week.  The Term 2 registration programme is now open.

MESSAGES

  • Please ensure that your child has the correct school uniform. In particular please ensure your child is wearing black shoes. Girls should wear plain white socks and boys should wear black or grey socks. You can review the school’s uniform policy at http://www.nordangliaeducation.com/our-schools/shanghai/puxi/our-students/student-life/our-school-uniform
  • If for any reason your child is unable to take part in PE, please send a signed message in your child’s communication book.  Your child still needs to bring in their PE kit to enable them to participate as a coach, an official or to give feedback.  If your child would be swimming, they should bring their normal PE kit.
  • Please be aware that the days are getting colder and wetter and dress your child accordingly.   A warm hat is also recommended, particularly on swimming days.

LITERACY

The children will continue developing their knowledge on explanation texts this week.  They will invent their own pointless inventions, based on Wallace and Gromitt’s  ‘Craking contraptions’ and then write an explanation text about it, sequentially explaininghow it works.  Causal connectives, and time connectives, and how they can be used effectively is the grammar focus for next week.

KEY VOCABULARY

Time connectives, causal connectives, flow chart, explanation, why, what, how, introduction, conclusion, connectives, time, causal, cause, effect

MATHS

In Maths next week, we will be studying multiplication and the different laws surrounding it. Starting with a recap of factors and factor pairs, we will discuss the commutative law of numbers with the children. We will follow this by investigating the associative and distributive laws of number, looking at if they apply to all four of our main operations. To round off the week, the children will recap solving multiplication problems using formal methods before then using their knowledge to solve word problems.

KEY VOCABULARY

Multiplication, commutative, associative, distributive, operation

THEMED LEARNING

The students will have a celebration of science and conduct experiments using a number of household items. The experiments include making objects float, using electricity in different ways and realising the power of vinegar.

KEY VOCABULARY

Predict, hypothesis, method, conclude, explain, phenomena

COMPUTER PROGRAMMING AND DIGITAL LITERACY

In computing this week we will use WEDO Lego to make a monkey that taps a beat. They will need to have a motor to turn a gear which then turns a cam, the cams in turn then push on lever arms. They will change cams to see what effect it has and extend their learning by recording sounds to control it. We will also be completing our word processing of our poems and stories using word. They will need to resize fonts and add photos using the corner to resize after copying and pasting images. They will also create a world full of strange and surreal juxtaposition using pictures from the internet to go alongside their poetry work.

KEY VOCABULARY

Cams, motors, sounds, record, lever, arm, control, copy, paste, resize

DUTCH

Vroeger was alles ...

Homework: To memorise vocabulary learnt, in preparation for the following week’s lesson.

Year 3 / 4 Spanish – Ms Watson

This week our focus is on Christmas traditions in Spain. We will begin with Christmas Carols and then look at important dates, food and celebrations over the Christmas period. For homework children will need to organise ingredients for the cooking session.

Year  3/ 4 French:  Miss Wood

Next week the children will learn about different animals, revising names they already know and adding to the list. They will reinforce vocabulary by singing songs, learning a French poem and creating a quiz sheet.
Homework: to design clothes for the clown
