Living in Shanghai

In Shanghai, students have access to a world of possibilities including a range of sporting activities outside school, world-class shopping and fun and interesting activities to enjoy with their family.

We asked one of our students, Constantin Herbertz, to write a short piece on living in the city and to share his thoughts on why this is one of the best cities in the world.

"My name is Constantin Herbertz, I’m 15 years old and I have lived in Shanghai for the past 8 years. Prior to moving to Shanghai, I lived in a small town called Krefeld, in Germany. For anyone who thinks of Shanghai as an ancient Chinese city, think again. Shanghai is one of the most entertaining cities in the world! You just don’t know it yet…

Shanghai will blow your mind. Whether you’re from a small town, or from a big urbanized city already, it doesn’t matter- you will fall in love with the unique culture, the seasonal cuisine and with the style of Shanghai, the city itself. The experience is truly sensational. It’s a different world. What I especially love about Shanghai is that it’s a mega city stuffed full of different things to do - you could never get bored here. For people my age, there are lots of concerts from popular artists, including Usher, David Guetta, Zedd, Alicia Keys, Maroon 5, Justin Bieber and so many more!

You also have more relaxing options of course, such as the beautiful Bund, where you can gaze at the famous Shanghai skyline.

I also love the fact that the culture shock is so big. You learn lots about different cultures and expand your knowledge of the Chinese mentality, which can be quite amusing because it’s different to ours in so many ways!

You have all of the world’s cuisines in this city. I personally adore the Chinese cuisine. The tastes vary from sweet, to sour, to salty, to spicy. The traditional Chinese food Dumplings are a breath-taker I assure you. Dumplings can have everything in them, though the Chinese tend to mainly put in vegetables, pork, beef or shrimp.  The best place to try these is at the Din Tai fung restaurant. The food is absolutely fantastic every time we go there, making every return a delight.

As well as trying different cuisines, Shanghai has so much more to offer. The city centre itself is exhilarating. There are a lot of stunning skyscrapers strewn across the city. Among them, the (soon to be finished) Dragon Tower – the second tallest skyscraper in the world. The city is extremely exciting when with friends as well of course. You can visit the ‘Bottle Opener’, which is Shanghai’s tallest standing building at the moment, and walk on the glass floor on top of the tower, giving you a view of a sheer drop of almost 500 metres down.

School plays a big role in the life of a 15 year old of course. I enjoy it because it gives an international kick to my life here. The British International School Shanghai (BISS, Puxi) has students from a wide range of different nationalities, making the community so diverse! I quickly found friends, due to the friendly environment at our school. There are loads of extra-curricular activities (ECAs) to choose from. Stretching from all sorts of sports teams, to writing clubs, to gardening clubs, in order for you to progress in that area or just for fun!

I have one younger sister attending primary school here, and she absolutely loves it. For her, everything is ideal here at BISS Puxi. School for her is never boring, she has friends to see, and lunchtimes are fun with a nice playground. Another great location to just chill out that’s very near the school is the Shanghai Racquet Club where a lot of my friends from school live. There are tons of fun activities, and also for the older ones, lots of sport activities like table tennis, swimming, badminton, tennis and a fantastic gym. Playgrounds are common, and always busy.

Shanghai is simply my favorite city in the world, hands down. I love the culture, the diversity and the people here. Life here is different and I assure you, you’re going to love it!"
