Staff Profile: Rus Ekkel

Rus Ekkel

Head of Media

I graduated from Cardiff University with a BA (Hons) in English Literature, but my passion for film led me into various aspects of the media before I became a teacher. I worked briefly at Sky News and MTV Europe before spending several years as an Assistant Editor on films such as The Mummy Returns, Troy and 007: The World Is Not Enough.

After some period of travel, I trained as a teacher at a school in South London, before combining both my career paths to work as a tutor to child actors. This included working with young actors on BBC’s Outnumbered, ITV’s sitcom Benidorm and films such as Harry Potter 6, The Golden Compass and Defiance. Film tutoring involved travelling on location to a wide range of places, including Lithuania, Australia, Thailand, Spain and Wandsworth!  I came to BISS Puxi seeking a more stable lifestyle and to continue my passion for film and media by teaching these subjects.

Creative pursuits take up much of my free time – writing, filming and editing short films, as well as enjoying theatre, cinema and live music. I enjoy football, though taking part in games is not longer as easy as in my younger days! My family are musicians, but I missed out on the musical gene (though I am reasonably good on the spoons!)

What the students say about me...

"Mr Ekkel makes learning fun!"

"I always look forward to Film class and have learned so much about films that I’d never normally watch!"
