World Languages & EAL Teachers

  • Fiona McConnon

    Head of Global Languages

    Fiona McConnon

    Fiona McConnon graduated from University College London (UCL) with an honours degree in French and from York University with a PGCE in French and sport. She subsequently taught English at a University in Lanzhou with Voluntary Service Overseas for two years, where she became fascinated by Mandarin. This led to her spending five years mainly in Beijing as a British Council – Chinese government scholar at the Beijing Languages Institute, completing a Masters in the Teaching of Chinese as a Foreign Language.

    As Head of Languages at an International School in Beijing, she used western language learning methodologies in her Mandarin teaching to foster enjoyment and confidence in her students.  She more recently headed up the MFL and Classics Faculty in an outstanding school in north London, Northwood College, which excelled in developing deeper thinking in students.

    She has held a number of management roles at the British Embassy and in UK-based charities involved in work related to China and has completed an MSc in Development Management with the Open University.

    Ana Rosa Lara-Abreu

    Ana Rosa did her BA in Education in her native Cuba, then completed an MBA in London. She has worked teaching languages in Cuba, Mexico, Greece, Germany and the UK. She is a hands-on teacher and getting children motivated to learn Spanish is her main objective. Ana Rosa believes that the success of learning languages lies in setting clear foundations. Ana Rosa is excited to join BISS and to offer her international teaching experience to the community.

    William Walker

    EAL Teacher

    William Walker

    William graduated from the University of Edinburgh, UK in 2006 with a Masters degree in Classics and Medieval History.  After graduating he trained to become an English language specialist before taking on a position in Spain, where as well as gaining experience teaching a wide range of ages and levels he also met his future wife in a Spanish class.  Following her back to her hometown of Shanghai William worked at a well-respected Chinese university for over three years, initially as an ESL teacher and later as Director of Studies.  William then decided to return to the UK so he could apply for PGCE courses, during which time he worked at a prestigious adult language school in Worcester.

    Lisa Cavanagh

    Lisa studied German with International Studies at Warwick University from 1991-1995. She then took a year out and completed her CTEFLA certificate for EAL and taught children in EAL schools in Oxfordshire. She then found herself working in retail management for 2 years, but felt that her heart lay in teaching and so returned to Warwick to complete her PGCE.

    Elise Rickford

    Elise is a French national with a degree in Languages and Civilisation from the University of Toulouse Le Mirail in France. After an ERASMUS year, she gained a PGCE from Reading University in 2000. Elise then worked in selective and non-selective schools in the UK before moving to Beijing in 2013. She has taught French, German and Spanish to Primary and Secondary students and been an Upper School form tutor.

    Bae Sang Duk

    Mr Sang Duk Bae has taught Korean Literacy and Essay for over 10years in Korean and China. He has been helped hundreds of students to go to their ideal universities in the past years. He raises sense of challenge within IB and IGCSE Korean, moved to BISS in order to share his knowledge and experiences to students in BISS.

    Chris Samsom

    When Chris volunteered as an English teacher at a school in Cusco, Peru, she discovered her interest in education and decided to make teaching her profession. After finishing her Bachelor of Education she worked as a supply teacher at different primary schools in the city of Rotterdam, in The Netherlands, before working as a class teacher at a school for children with special educational needs (SEN).

    Cindy De Borger

    Cindy graduated from the University of Ghent in Belgium.  She has a Master’s in Political and Social Sciences and specialised in Communication Sciences.  She chased her childhood dream and afterwards gained a Post Graduate Certificate of Education.  After several teaching assignments in Key Stage 1 and 2, she started teaching Dutch to non-native adult speakers.
