The Water Challenge Update

The work on the Water Challenge has been going a pace across the whole school.
  • water challenge

In Year 6 and for those groups in Secondary who joined the project,  have been focussing on “Irrigation”.

In rural areas around the world, where water is precious; scarce and not delivered to hand, the need to use water wisely is vital. On average around the world, around 70% of all water usage is on irrigation.  The students have been looking at how we can help to reduce the amount of water used, or into ways of making the process easier. All the students have been working hard, researching their ideas and creating their designs.

The inventiveness and ingenuity of all the groups, is as impressive as ever, their designs showing imagination and sound technical understanding. For most of those involved, the next step will be the most exciting, as they get to build their designs on a small scale, test them and then adapt and prefect them, based upon their findings. This in itself is yet another challenging; enjoyable and rewarding stage in this excellent project, but beyond this they can also look forward to the final selection of the single design that will be BISB submission in this competition.

The lucky group who’s idea is selected, will see their design realised as a fully working, life sized version. Along the way we will be photographing their progress, filming them in action and turning it into a filmed record of the whole journey, as well as writing the scientific submission. So until we have news of the successful design and which group’s idea it was, we will sign off and return to all the fun of the work ahead of us.

The water challenge was a great experience for the whole primary. We have been researching, designing, experimenting and finally building our projects for one whole week. Each year group had a different water challenge question to solve and it was great to see the whole school working as a team.

"In year 6, the problem was ‘How to create an Irrigation System’. First we had to find out what irrigation was, we then planned out a system that could be used in a primary school in Kenya. After all our hard work we started to build the system then we had to write a PowerPoint. It was a difficult challenge to write the power point because we had to include every single step. We were using saws, hammers, glue guns and lots of different tools to create the best irrigation system possible. It was a really exciting week and we learnt a lot about designing and building projects, we also had to improvise in case of any problems, of which there were many!

We thoroughly enjoyed working together on our projects; it was really motivating because you could try out new things which you would not normally do! To find out more about the Water Challenge log on to the Global Classroom."
