BratMUN

Political intrigue, dubious partnerships with countries and witty insults to rivalling countries. This and a lot more was part of BratMUN 2014 from Friday the 7th to Sunday the 9th. BratMUN an annual event where students are given countries to represent as delegations for the Bratislava Model United Nations (BratMUN for short) to give students the idea and experience of working together with other people but on a very formal level, whilst trying to maintain a cheerful and feel-good atmosphere.

Students from the IB1 and IB2 group from BISB formed teams and delegations of countries, assigned by the BratMUN staff. The students are assigned different committees, including, but not limited to the Security Council, International Bioethics Committee, World Health Organization, Human Rights Council and many more. These required thorough study from the students, as well as a solid policy statement.

 

The event itself consisted of over 150 student delegates, from 9 different countries. The first day and a half was focused on the individual committees, and the rest for the General Assembly, a meeting where all the 150 delegates met and tried to come to a general resolution to the topic of “International intervention in separatist movements.”  This was the part of the BratMUN experience that I think required the most cooperation, since all the delegations got together and a resolution had to be reached. Alliances with countries had to be made based on actual relationships between countries, so that they are represented as best as possible. The degree of authenticity was very high, mainly due to the formal attire as well as mountainous pile of rules of procedure that had to be obeyed by the delegates.

 

It was quite a fun yet educative experience which gave me incredible insight into the lives of politicians and how each country works with one another, and that the final resolutions are because of compromise rather than getting what each country wants, which is indeed quite realistic and not only from a political standpoint but also for day-to-day applications and interactions with people.

 

To summarise, BratMUN was a very unique experience and I am glad to have been able to take part in this event.
