Maths Day

Last Wednesday 19th March we celebrated Maths Day at BISB and it really was an exciting day! THANK YOU to pupils, teachers and parents who all took part enthusiastically to make it a fun and successful day.
  • Children dressed up as numbers

The children worked with a partner class to explore the school, the surrounding area and the pupils who make up our school. They had to generate their own questions, think about the most suitable way to collect data and then work out what they were going to do about the data. Some classes explored the local traffic to see how busy the roads around school were, some looked at the environment; collecting and sorting the rubbish found in the playgrounds, and searching for mini-beasts, others measured and timed to see if people with big feet could jump further, those with long arms could throw further, and if the taller children could run faster than shorter friends.

Assembly was a wonderful opportunity to share our results, and it was great to see the range of data collection and the variety of ways in which we can handle and interpret it.  Some classes had drawn pictograms and bar graphs, others had converted the data into percentages and used it to create pie charts:

"41% of rubbish in the playground is plastic" (Samco Year 5)

"That's nearly half!" (Hannah Year 2)

Some classes had made wonderful posters, and others had used excel and the ipads to display their work. Working with a partner class provided a wonderful opportunity for the older children to explain different mathematical concepts to the younger ones, and for them to share their knowledge and learn from each other.
