Year 7 Vienna Trip – Monday, 8.12.14

If any of us was struggling to get into the festive mood then the traditional annual excursion to Vienna and the Christmas Market at the Rathaus was a sure-fire way to blow away the ‘Bah! Humbug!’ doubts.

Blessed with a break from the recent incessant rain and gloomy skies, we embarked with 41 of this year’s cohort of Year 7 students on a brief guided tour of the inner heart of Vienna’s beautiful city, followed by a good old Wiener Schnitzel and Apfelstrudel lunch, and topped off with a busy hour at the atmospheric Weihnachtsmarkt in front of the majestic Rathaus.

After completing their fact-finding worksheets about the historical buildings and characters of Viennese life, students then had to fill in a second questionnaire about the Christmas Market itself. They also had the task of buying an item which they could present and share with their classmates back at school in the next German lesson.

Feedback from the students revealed predominant satisfaction with the trip, coloured with occasional comments such as these:

-       ‘The food was awesome.’

-       ‘I didn’t like the food.’

-       ‘The Schnitzel was massive.’

-       ‘The soup was too salty.’

-       ‘I liked the soup.’

-       ‘We wanted more time at the market.’

-       ‘It was too cold. We should go when it’s warmer.’

-       ‘I used quite a bit of German.’

-       ‘Everyone there spoke English.’

… which all just goes to prove that, even if you can’t please all of the people all of the time, at least they had an experience which left some lasting impression on them. Let’s hope it also imbued them with the festive spirit of thinking about others who are less fortunate than themselves.

‘Frohe Weihnachten wünschen Ihnen allen Frau Hlavinkova (die den Ausflug organisiert hat), Frau Freeman, Frau Price und Herr Pugh.’
