As part of our German curriculum students have discovered new aspects of Viennese culture. Entering the world of the history of Vienna in one of the eldest monasteries of Vienna, 10 m under the earth surface, they experienced a time travel machine, simulated bombing in a World War Two shelter and found out who brought coffee to Vienna.

Coffee is a sustainable part of the Viennese culture. The tradition of the, “Kaffehauskutur” creates since the 17th century the typical Viennese atmosphere and since 2011 is on the list of the UNESCO heritage. In the “Konditorei” Demel with the Hofburg in the background we enjoyed a cup of coffee with tasty homemade cakes.

Boosted with sugar we started our Vienna tour with one of the best guides of Vienna. Inge explained to us all about the life in Vienna in the time of Belle Epoque, and showed us the well-hidden and secret places and courtyards of Vienna from the 18th century. All of this information we received in German, with students asking inquiring questions and practicing their German skills.

The walking made us hungry again, and what would round the picture of Vienna better than eating a typical Austrian sausage. Next to Albertina, in the best known, Wűrstelständl”, we ordered and ate our sausages together with local people and tourists alike, and rounded off a perfect day in Vienna.

All the knowledge and experience we have made will be used in our lessons and prepare the students for their final IB examsinations.

“The mixture of interaction and educating was perfect…..” (Jackie). “It was a great opportunity to learn more about the culture of our neighbor and the trip allowed us to practice German language with German speakers in real life situations. …”
