Woodwork in Reception

When we were designing the Early Years Centre we were keen to provide the Reception children with new experiences, one of which was a woodworking bench with real tools, real wood and a unique learning opportunity.
Woodwork provides an activity that is rich in so many areas of learning and development. It encompasses creative thinking, maths skills, scientific investigation, physical development and coordination, develops language, communication, and much more.

We started with basic woodwork skills of using the tools correctly and safely; hammering and sawing were the focus of the first week; and then how to use screwdrivers and sanding. After the break, we will be encouraging the children to combine wood and bottle tops to create their very own projects.
We have been delighted to see how all the children have followed the rules and used all the tools safely and to see the concentration on their faces as well as the excitement as some of them used 'proper tools' for the very first time.
