Key Stage 2 (Year 3-6)

At Key Stage 2 students are encouraged to take more responsibility for their own learning. We help our students develop the skills for independent learning, reflection and self-assessment.

Personal and social skills continue to be important so we give students the chance to lead and manage groups, run class meetings, give presentations, plan investigations and use their initiative.
The broad and balanced UK curriculum provides the basis for our formal curriculum at Key Stage 2 and ensures progression and continuity. We adopt a CREATIVE approach to curriculum delivery and try to adopt a combination of discreet subject teaching and cross curricular approaches, ensuring relevance but also academic rigor. We recognise the technological world that our students are growing up in and so we are always building opportunities for ICT to be used and exploited across the curriculum. Students research, record and edit, build their own websites, make short films and animation, and create dynamic interactive displays and presentations.
Students at this stage are challenged to become more actively involved in their own learning and will experience a wide range of teaching styles and activities. They may spend “a day in the life of an Ancient Egyptian” or designing, building and exploring the properties of a parachute. They become product designers and marketing managers as they are challenged to sell their product at a design fair. Science investigations use specialist equipment and may take place in specialist science labs, while our budding poets and authors may enter local and international competitions or publish their writing on international websites. Our aspiring politicians and eco-activists represent their classes in the Student and Eco Councils. We also exploit the local area arranging educational visits and workshops and also inviting guest speakers and artists form all disciplines to work with our students.
Through this stimulating KS 2 curriculum, all children are nurtured to develop their knowledge and understanding and key skills across a broad curriculum that includes Literacy, Numeracy, Science, ICT, History, Geography, Music, Drama, Art, Physical Education and Swimming. Children in Year 3 start with their second language – German or French, taught by the specialist language teachers. All children have lessons in music and physical education taught by specialist teachers. They also have the chance to participate in swimming lessons taught in a local swimming pool by excellent swimming instructors.
Our students make excellent academic progress but also have the chance to develop their personal, emotional, creative and physical skills through our extensive sports, arts, music, student and eco councils, educational visits and residential programmes. By the end of Key Stage 2, our students are ready, academically and emotionally, for the transition to Secondary School.
