Yonsei University Visit - the 'Y' in 'SKY'

More than 150 parents from the Korean community in Shanghai attended a talk by the Admissions team from Yonsei University in Seoul, Korea hosted by the Pudong Campus of The British International School Shanghai.

Being one of the oldest private universities in Korea, Yonsei University first established in 1885 and whose core mission is to educate leaders who will contribute to humanity in the spirit of “truth and freedom.”  300,000 Yonsei alumni who take this calling to heart can be found in key leadership positions around the world. Yonsei is proud of its history and reputation as a leading institution of higher education and research in Asia and hosts a very selective pool of students from around the world.

Yonsei is one of Korea's three "SKY" universities. These are the most prestigious universities in the country, with the other members being Seoul National University and Korea University. Admissions are extremely competitive. Inside Korea, admission to a SKY university is widely considered as determining one's career and social status. So-called SKY universities are also regarded as such due to the difficulty to enter; literally, “like reaching for the SKY!”

Notable alumni include Kim Woo-jung (김우중), Founder and CEO of Daewoo Group; Koo Bon-Moo (구본무), Chairman of LG Group and Choi Do-Suk (최도석), CFO of Samsung Electronics. Yonsei has 257,931 alumni all bound by Korean culture to actively help new graduates. As Yonsei has been the premier private university in Korea for many decades, and due to the recent development of Korea, this provides new graduates with incredible opportunities for advancement and networking with senior executives within corporations, governments, and NGOs.

Korean parents hold study in the highest esteem and instil the importance on their children to study very hard, attend hagwons (private academies) and get private tutors to ensure their test scores are the best they can possibly be, all to ensure that they can enter a SKY university.

It is expected that whichever of these SKY universities you graduate from, you will have an easier time getting a job, being promoted, marrying a successful/attractive partner, and enjoying success in politics or business.

Thus it was a great honour for the school to have been chosen as a venue for the Admissions lecture in Shanghai.  Thanks and appreciation to Sun Hyi Todd and the school Korean parents for organising and of course to Miss Chang Hee Park, Miss Suh Jin Moon, Admissions Officers and Mr. Sang Woo Jeon, Assistant Manager from Yonsei University for engaging the audience in such insightful advice and information about the university.

Miss Chang Hee Park from Yonsei University commented: “Yonsei University very much appreciate the opportunity provided by the British International School to invite all Korean parents from around Shanghai to our talk; even offering 6 buses to help transport the guests.  The school facilities are very impressive, students are lucky to have the opportunity to study here in this environment.“
