GYLC Day 5: Searching Through Our Past

The sun has risen for our exciting journey! Today, we were told, is the day when we would be visiting the National Mall. The National Mall isn't a shopping mall as we all think, it is actually an area where all museums and memorials are all located. We were allowed to go freely with our small groups to visit a museum of our choice.

In my group, we went to the Natural history and American museum. In these museums, I learnt lots of information about the wild life and also understood a bit of American history by looking through their Vietnamese War. However, because of time limitation, we weren't able to see all the amazing museums that were in that area.

Once we re-assembled at the Natural history museum, we went to the U.S. Holocaust museum to explore the history of the Jews and Germans. During our time in the Holocaust museum, I learned loads about the suffering of the Jews and how the actions of Hitler caused many Jewish lives to suffocate and die off without any mercy, it was also a time for remembrance of the people who died during World War II.

After the tour of the U.S. Holocaust museum, we went to the memorials that were just close by the museum. The memorials are: the National World War II; Vietnam Veterans & Vietnam Women; Lincoln and the Korean War Veterans Memorial. During the tour of these memorials, I was mostly amazed by Lincoln's Memorial. The posture that was taken by Lincoln created a sense of power and justice. I was especially excited as I was able to see a statue of Lincoln for real, because the time I have seen images if Lincoln, it was in movies. It was a great opportunity for us to see the great Lincoln of Washington D.C.

After the memorials, we went back and had our dinner. Once dinner was over, we had a cultural exchange LGM meeting, where each of us would present their own culture, either by talking or giving things to each other. The biggest thing that I learnt from this event is that all cultures are linked and are not really much different. Even though we may see it that way, there exist a lot of similarities.
