Head of Humanities, Service and CAS
Before coming to NAIS Pudong, Jane had 21 years of teaching experience in the UK and overseas. She has been Head of Department, Head of Year, Head of Sixth Form and Assistant Head Teacher of schools in the UK and has trained teachers in Nigeria while always maintaining her passion and enthusiasm for Geography as the most important subject in the world. In terms of achievements, she is particularly proud of the number of her students who have gone on to study and to use their Geography education to make a difference in the world: she enjoys hearing from students who are involved in jobs as diverse as aid work in Mali, wetland conservation in Australia, urban planning in Liverpool or teaching in tough schools in the UK.
Throughout her career, Jane has taught many lessons on China including the One-Child Policy, the reasons for China’s extraordinary economic growth, environmental and social issues across the country. Because of this, she was excited at the prospect of relocating to Shanghai, a city at the very centre of China’s amazing transformation. To be able to live here and see it all first hand at the same time as working in a school such as NAIS was too good an opportunity to miss.
Since arriving here two years ago Jane has spent any available weekends and holidays exploring China. She loves to see new places and is equally happy travelling with friends or solo. A highpoint was waking up to see the sunrise reflected in the slopes of Everest from base camp. Jane hopes to share at least some of this with students by working on opportunities for them to see, experience and maybe fall in love with new, interesting and sometimes challenging places.
