Design and Technology Class

Design and Technology education helps develop children's skills through collaborative working and problem-solving, and knowledge in design, materials, structures, mechanisms and electrical control. Design and technology is a practical and valuable subject. It enables children and young people to actively contribute to the creativity, culture, wealth and well-being of themselves, their community and their nation. It teaches how to take risks and so become more resourceful, innovative, enterprising and capable.

Léman International School Chengdu Design Department is well equipped with modern and traditional equipment and tools that cater for the needs of students and help them with learning. Among the modern equipment, the Design room has two 3D MakerBot Replicator + printers which are extensively used by students of all year groups.

Design room has almost all traditional machines such as Pillar Drill, Bend saw, Scroll saw, Circular saw, Disk Sander, Belt Sander, router and other related machines and tools. This picture highlights some of our equipment in the Design workshop.

Safety in Design workshop

The room is designed in way that is safe for students to work safely. When moving in the Design room students navigate their way very safely. All the machines are at an appropriate distance from each other and clearly marked for safety precautions such as WEAR GOGGLES, DO NOT USE UNLESS SHOWN, STAY OUT OF BOX, etc. We follow UK DATA (Design and Technology Association) guidance for safety; https://www.data.org.uk/.

Pupils follow the standard IB MYP design cycle where they investigate problems, plan their research, design the solution, create and ultimately evaluate their achievements. Here is the design cycle:

Details of the projects different year groups are working on:

YEAR 7 YEAR 8 YEAR 9 YEAR 10 YEAR 11
Fictional Character Building a Bridge Tree House Model Modern City Model Desk Tidy

The students are very excited since their Design Teacher has returned to China. Before they had online classes, now they have hands-on activities. It is the time for all year groups to realise their imagination that they put together in the form of design ideas. Year 7 are busy printing their Imaginative Fictional Characters on 3D printers. Year 8 are about to complete the making of their Truss Bridges from popsicle (lollipop) sticks. They have produced very unique and interesting designs – you are welcome to come and see and appreciate their efforts. Year 9 had to design a Tree House for stress free life away from the city. This group of students are half way to complete the making of the Tree House model. Year 10 are involved in the designing and making of a Future City model, they are also making good progress on the realisation of their model. Year 11 were given a project of desk tidy, a solution to a messy desk of a teenager who has lots of stuff on a desk, and not enough space to study. Students have to come up with a system of an Organiser (Desk Tidy) that will keep the study desk tidy and easy to access the contents of the desk, such as clips, scissors, glue, pins, memory stick, remote control, etc. Year 11 students have completed their work on a mock for their prototype, very soon this group will start making their solution.
