Primary School (Year 1 - Year 6)

The Primary Curriculum

Our LIS Chengdu Primary school curriculum incorporates the best of the English National Curriculum combined with the principles of the International Primary Curriculum and is designed to provide the highest academic quality of education.

We take the best aspects of these two consistent and rigorous frameworks and adapt them to ensure that our primary school curriculum is relevant for children growing up in here in Chengdu, whilst also placing a strong emphasis on educating global citizens. The English National Curriculum is used by over 30,000 international schools in the UK and overseas, which brings reassurance to parents and stability to students – both important factors when moving between countries.

Learning at our Primary school

Our methodology at Léman International School Chengdu emphasises the needs and targets of each individual child. A positive mindset is encouraged to build confidence and ensure success.

There is a rigorous development of English and Maths skills, while all other subjects are dealt with in a variety of ways. We use a thematic approach to learning, where possible, as we believe that learning needs to be contextualised for children to make connections and make sense of the world. This is why a combination of the English National Curriculum combined with the International Primary Curriculum (IPC) works best to achieve this.  However, we also believe that some important aspects of learning are best taught in a stand-alone fashion. Our curriculum is both knowledge and skills rich, while also putting a strong emphasis on values and attitudes to learning. Our talented teachers use judgements about whether learning should be enquiry-based, child-led or project based but we always follow a child-centred approach and seek to inspire a love of learning for all.

Pupils will be taught Art, Music, PE and Chinese by specialist teachers throughout primary school. We take an holistic approach to each child’s education to ensure we’re producing well-rounded students who are responsible citizens, showing respect and making an effective contribution to society.

Detailed curriculum information per year group will be shared with parents via our online platform ‘Firefly’. You can see the outlines of the themes studied here. The PSHE learning during the course of the year focuses on the emotional well-being of our children and ensures they remain healthy and happy and ready to learn.

Lower Primary

The Lower Primary phase in our Primary school consists of three year groups, Year 1, Year 2 and Year 3. During Year 1 we build on children’s previous learning in the areas covered by the early years curriculum in Nursery and Reception.

Children are then taught in key areas such as Guided Reading, Phonics and Mental Maths. We place a strong emphasis on the development of core skills in Numeracy and Literacy. Teachers ensure that fundamental building blocks are embedded and reinforced regularly.

Subjects such as Science, History, Geography, Design Technology, and Computing are grouped into topics and learning takes place within the context of the IPC. Teachers plan themes that reflect the interests of the children in each class, and a balance is provided between creative and physical activities, ensuring that the curriculum develops the whole child.

We plan our primary school curriculum carefully with long, medium and short-term goals for our pupils. Our teachers adopt a creative and practical approach which develops our pupil's natural curiosity and fosters a desire to learn, think and take appropriate risks.

We strive to ensure that all children achieve at a high level. Thus, we carefully plan learning and development around the individual needs and interests of each child, using modern assessment methods to ensure that every student makes continuous progress. These include Assessment for Learning (AFL) techniques including self and peer assessment as well as sharing the learning and success criteria, which helps to ensure each child knows what to do in order to progress.

Upper Primary

As children enter Upper Primary, we encourage them to be academically inquisitive and to continue to develop as independent learners, showing initiative and leadership skills whilst remaining high-performing learners who take pride in their studies and are motivated to do well.

The Upper Primary phase consists of Years 4, 5 and 6.  Pupils are supported in reaching their full potential through an individualised approach to their learning, and progress continues to be closely monitored. High academic standards are maintained through National Curriculum key objectives. Our students follow and receive instruction in these subjects daily. Pupils work in small groups with others of a similar ability, which allows them to be supported or challenged as appropriate.

Using English National Curriculum best practice with the principles of the IPC, we teach Science, History, Geography, Design Technology, and Computing through a topic-based approach where learning is integrated into child-centred activities. Teachers ensure that the topic themes are broad and balanced, so as to provide continuity and progression across the year groups.  Teaching through inspiring and exciting topics allows us to present an inquiry-based approach to the curriculum. We encourage pupils to become independent learners and allow them to take ownership of their learning and progress.

We create a learning environment where pupils are pushed to extend and challenge their learning, to analyse and reflect, to take risks and to develop intellectual confidence. We strive to ensure that all children achieve at a high level. We plan learning and development around the individual needs and interests of each child, using modern assessment methods to ensure that every child makes continuous progress.

Upper Primary prepares and supports our students for the smoothest possible transfer into Year 7 and beyond. Our students should leave their primary years as highly engaged and self-motivated learners, well-equipped with the knowledge, skills and the learning tools needed to achieve their goals and develop as confident global learners.

Learning outside the classroom

We aim to provide regular opportunities for children to learn beyond the classroom and develop new skills through participation in productions, educational visits, themed days, after school clubs and residential trips. We also recognise the role of technology in the current and future lives of our students and create meaningful opportunities for children to learn, explore and use modern technology across the curriculum.

Through the formal and informal curriculum, we encourage all children to develop social confidence; to be self-reliant and self-disciplined; and to form positive relationships with students and adults. We help them to become more globally aware and to start to understand the responsibilities of being part of a local or global community.
