I began teaching when I decided to travel to Vietnam for a year after I completed my 4 year degree in cinematography and a TEFL course. What was supposed to be a single year abroad became 8 as my passion for teaching grew. Beginning as an English teacher, teaching young learners in a training school, I encountered some professional difficulties that inspired me to learn and research more about appropriate teaching strategies. This sparked a deep interest and desire to improve my practice and gain more professional certifications related to teaching. After an additional year teaching English to University students in Kazakhstan I returned to my native South Africa and completed my CELTA certification. My husband and I then decided to move to China to continue to pursue our teaching career and focus on young learners in schools, rather than in training schools. This lead to a position as a PYP teaching in China, that allowed me the opportunity to truly engage with my own professional development and begin to understand and implement contemporary teaching practice and strategies that are in line with current best practice. As I was looking to further solidify my position as a teacher and gain a teaching certification, I undertook a PGCE. Still inspired by learning I am currently doing my Master in Education with a focus on inclusive and special education as it is my belief that every child deserves high quality, individualized teaching that caters to their needs and styles.
My teaching philosophy centers around viewing and treating students, form a young age, as highly capably and valuable members of our society who’s voices carry wight and should be heard. As I perceive children to be highly capable, so my expectations of them are high, not only academically but more importantly socially. Providing an environment to engage students with their peers, and the curriculum, that is supported by strategic interventions, will aide in building characteristics that are reflective of critical thinking, considerate and open minded citizens.
Planning and implementation are my strengths, which will aid in executing well structured, engaging learning experiences that take students away from desk bound teacher lead instruction and into deep, child lead, explorations of the subject matter. As I am passionate about inclusive education and value the diversities of our students body, I use universal design for learning to provide students with an array of opportunities to engage with learning that suits their style of learning and their developmental capabilities.
