Testimony of Santiago Fernández del Castillo, Class of 2019 alumnus
A few weeks ago, I visited the school to reconnect with my teachers and see the new facilities. This brief return reminded why I’m so proud of being a part of the Eton family. I want to share two specific encounters that perfectly reflect what this school meant—and still means—to me.
Inspiring Students
The first encounter was with a couple of students. A girl from 12th grade was working with suppliers and organizing fundraising events to transform the life of children. Another student, also a 12th grader, has been doing computer science projects more advanced than those I could even hope to dream up as a third-year data science student. Both of them are also excellent students.
When I met them, I remembered how Eton School gave me the tools to find myself and open a world of possibilities to explore my interests and develop skills. I was never as versatile as they are, but I did see my community grow and learned leadership skills as a soccer team captain, received applause in the auditorium, my heart swelled every December 23 when we delivered toys to Comedor Santa María, and I even experienced debate as the Student Government Association president. I also learned derivatives and the past tense, but every day I value more and more those experiences that made me who I am today.
Teachers Who Stay with You
My second encounter was with some of my teachers, who, with that sparkle that always lit up their eyes, dropped what they were doing to hug me and ask me about myself, my family and my friends. This was, once again, a testament to their humanity and warmth.
Before I left, Kevin asked me: “What did Mercedes Meca do with you guys? You always did great.” My answer was: “She taught us how to think with our hands.” Like Mercedes, the entire Eton family gave me the knowledge and experiences that fueled my love for creation and experimentation, something that makes me stand out in my field. This was the second most valuable thing the school gave me; the first were my friends, with whom I continue to share my life.
Thank you, Eton, for keeping your promise of empowering my heart and my mind.
